Alford Valley Railway |
Alford Valley Railway operates from the restored station yard which once marked the terminus of the branch line linking the villages of upper Donside with Kintore junction and hence to Aberdeen. The station building itself was completely reconstructed in 1982 as part of the Grampian Transport Museum, who display within it a fascinating collection of memorabilia and preserved ticket office furniture.
The narrow gauge railway commences from the original platform and proceeds in a northerly direction, skirting part of the local golf course, to enter the grounds of Haughton House. This used to be one of the largest estates in the Alford district, the former manor house now providing the focal point of Grampian Regional caravan/camping site and country park.
Most trains are hauled by Simplex Motorail 0-4-0 diesel locos with 20/28hp Dorman engines.
Santa Special Trains, 1st 2 weekends in December every year. Please check website for special weekends.
