Godalming Museum
A friendly, welcoming Museum which tells the story of Godalming and the surrounding area.
Behind the Georgian brick front, which faces the old Market House (the Pepperpot), in the heart of the town, the timber framed Museum building dates back to the 15th century.
The displays take the visitor from the Cretaceous into the 21st century, exploring the Saxon origins of the town, its surprisingly industrial history and some of the characters who have been associated with it over the centuries.
Titanic
This is the place to find out about the town's links with Georgia, the part it played in the tragedy of the Titanic, and about the embarrassing episode of the rabbits...
The peaceful courtyard garden is a living exhibit, demonstrating the planting and design ideas of Arts and Crafts gardener Gertrude Jekyll and architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, and complementing displays of their work in the galleries.
There is a lively exhibition programme, featuring the work of local artists and craft workers as well as exploring hidden aspects of the history of the town and surrounding area.
Local Studies Library
The Museum's local studies library is open each afternoon and gives the visitor access to a fascinating collection of photographs, documents and published works about the town.
The wonderful Percy Woods Collection of notes and transcripts is particularly valuable for family historians and the library also offers access to street directories, census returns and Parish registers.
Cafe and Gift Shop
There is a cafe and a gift shop which stocks some unique lines - including china decorated with Gertrude Jekyll's painting of Iris Stylosa - as well as Godalming souvenirs and pocket money toys.
