Hackney City Farm
City Farms exist to bring the countryside and its activities to urban people. They generally use otherwise derelict land and involve local people in their establishment and maintenance.
Hackney Farm is a registered charity and was established in 1984 on some 1.5 acres of land and buildings leased for 90 years from the London Borough of Hackney. Originally a brewery, the buildings are substantial and surround a granite-sett yard, while areas that were roads and buildings are now used for growing and grazing. The Farm is a valuable local resource seeking to involve everyone from this culturally diverse inner-city community.
We are not certified organic, but operate the Farm on organic and permaculture principles as much as possible. As in any farm animals contribute to the cost of their keep and so we sell eggs, manure, and yarn.
This is a good place for a mini-beast hunt, because ours is an organic garden. You can use the garden to learn about organic controls and companion planting, or about propagating plants. Along one wall are raised beds, so you are welcome to garden with us if you use a wheelchair. If you would like to know more about gardening at the Farm, please ask.
We offer school visits to the farm, workshops based around farming and food and give tours of the site. To book please visit our website.
