The Geffrye is the only museum in the UK to specialise in the domestic interiors and furniture of the urban middle-class. Its displays span from 1600 to 2000, forming a sequence of period rooms which capture the quintessential nature of English interior style.
The
museum is set in elegant, 18th century buildings, just north of the City. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens including an award-winning walled herb garden and a series of historical garden rooms which highlight the key changes in urban middle-class gardens from
the 17th to the 20th centuries (open April - October).
The museum and gardens are regularly brought to life through an innovative programme of seminars, workshops, drama and music. Special exhibitions are mounted throughout the year, exploring a wide variety of themes relating
to the museum's displays. A traditional favourite is the Christmas Past exhibition, when the period rooms are festively decorated to reflect 400 years of Christmas Traditions in English homes.
Facilities include a seventy-seater restaurant serving contemporary and traditional English food, and an imaginative gift shop.
