Darwin Cottage lies high up on the banks of the River Lossie on a hill overlooking Elgin City. It is a sunny cottage facing directly South and is tucked away amidst 5 acres of peaceful garden grounds of Braemorriston House.
The grounds are a haven for wildlife with hedgehogs, frogs, red squirrels, an abundance of wild birds and a few lucky pheasants. There are also occasional sitings of bird of prey, roe deer and foxes.
The Cottage is the former home of the Head Gardener. Formerly it had a lean-to greenhouse on its South wall as does Down House in Kent, the former family home of Charles Darwin. Here were grown exotic fruit and flowers for the Main House.
The Cottage is situated directly alongside Braemorriston House- a magnificent, Listed Grade B, Georgian Mansion built by Admiral Duff in 1819 and later remodelled and enlarged by the renowned Scottish architect William Robertson.
The entire Cottage is at ground level apart from the fun 'tower' room built into a raised turret. The cottage sleeps up to six, a twin and a double at ground level and room for two more in the 'tower' which also doubles as a games room for the children if the adults need some peace. A travel cot, to sleep a young child, can be provided on request. There is a large lounge, a kitchen with dining facilities, two WC's (one with a shower and the other with a bath), a large garden and private parking for up to two cars.
Darwin Cottage was recently renovated to a high standard of decor and HMO certificate Health and Safety standards and is new to the holiday letting market. For the comfort of guests we operate a no smoking policy within the Cottage.

Travel via the Airports:
Elgin is mid-way between Inverness airport (40 miles) and Aberdeen airport (65 miles) and is easily accessible from anywhere in the world. There is car hire readily available at both airports. Travel by Car: From either Invernes or Aberdeen follow the main A96 into Elgin. If you are travelling from the Edinburgh-Glasgow Central Belt to the South then take the A9 North to Aviemore then the A95 down the Spey Valley, then north via Rothes to Elgin on the A941. Darwin Cottage is about 500 metres from Elgin City Centre. Detailed instructions are on our website. Travel by Train: Elgin is on the Inverness to Aberdeen route, both of which have excellent links with the rest of mainland UK. Travel by Bus: Elgin has a bus terminal 5 minutes walk from Darwin Cottage. The travel buses are Stagecoach Bluebird. There are good links from all over the UK. In addition there is an excellent local bus service with the nearest bus stop just 2 minutes from Darwin Cottage. Travel by Sea: There is a direct year round ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Rosyth Scotland (close to Edinburgh). |
